Medical in progress: Man United’s first-team player currently undergoing medical to leave the Club

Manchester United defender Will Fish is undergoing a medical at Cardiff City today ahead of sealing a permanent move to the Welsh capital, WalesOnline understands.

It is understood that wile the deal is unlikely to be announced today, the formalities are hoped to have been agreed within the next 24 hours, with a package worth up to £2m reportedly agreed with the Old Trafford club.

Manager Erol Bulut will speak later today to confirm whether Fish will be done in time for him to be available to face south Wales rivals Swansea City in the derby on Sunday.

The Bluebirds were linked with a move for the 21-year-old back in January, but a disastrous month saw them rip up their plans towards the end of that window and completely change tack with just three days to go.

Bulut said he wanted potentially two new defenders amid strong interest from Luton Town in Mark McGuinness – and the Hatters this week completed a move for the 23-year-old. Cardiff had already brought in Jesper Daland from Cercle Brugge for a fee which could eventually rise to £3m.

Fish represents a further addition to the back line, with Bulut keen to send Malachi Fagan-Walcott out on loan for another year of men’s football.

A number of Championship clubs have registered an interest in Fish, but Cardiff have won the race for the central defender.

Fish made 45 appearances for Hibs last term and it is understood he wants a more prominent role this season and wants to kickstart his career in earnest away from Old Trafford.

Fish was taken off on a stretcher in the defeat by Liverpool in South Carolina during pre-season, but the injury wasn’t as bad as initially feared, which has allowed him to recover and seek a move away.

Fish will be Cardiff’s seventh signing of the summer following the arrivals of Calum Chambers, Chris Willock, Alex Robertson, Wilfried Kanga, Anwar El Ghazi and Daland.
