Michael Owen sends warning message to Manchester United loanee ‘the only way is down
Jadon Sancho has been told to ‘fight’ for his Manchester United future with former Red Devils striker Michael Owen backing the Borussia Dortmund loanee to save his Premier League career.
The common consensus is that, as long as Erik ten Hag remains the Manchester United manager, Jadon Sancho will have no part to play at Old Trafford.
But with Ten Hag’s future far from secure – United have this week been linked with a host of replacements as the phrase ‘no smoke without fire’ comes to mind – any lingering hopes Jadon Sancho may have about a fresh start in Manchester could soon be boosted by a change in the dugout.
Jadon Sancho facing uncertain Manchester United future
“Manchester United invested a lot of money in Jadon,” Owen, a Premier League winner under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2011, tells BuliNews. “I’m sure they don’t want to see that asset just fall away.
“They’ve sent him back to his second home in the hope that he can rekindle that fire and that performance that he was missing at Manchester United.
“Things change quickly in football. Maybe, by the end of the season, things will have changed at Manchester United. Maybe there will be a new manager, a new set-up and Jadon can potentially come back to the club and have a fresh start, which might be nice for him.”
Sancho cannot merely rest his hopes on a change of manager, however. A return to Borussia Dortmund is yet to have the desired effect with the England international still a pale imitation of his old self in black-and-yellow. Sancho would also have a lot of work to do rebuilding the bridges he burned during a host of seemingly half-hearted displays for his parent club, not to mention his role in a very public breakdown in relations between player and coach.
Dortmund have already confirmed, meanwhile, that they will struggle to finance a permanent deal for a player they sold for £73 million back in 2021.
Will Sancho outlast Erik ten Hag?
“At the moment, it looks like it would be difficult for him to try and force his way back in at Manchester United,” former Ballon D’Or winner Owen adds. “But now that he is back in Dortmund, I think it could all work out well for Jadon if his performances get back to the level that we all know he can play at.
“It’s an important time in his career because he’s still young. The only way is down from Manchester United. It’s a big club, so he has to fight and fight and fight to make sure that his level stays high and that he remains an England player.”
Sancho is not the only Man United player to struggle out on loan. Donny van de Beek is yet to make an impact at Eintracht Frankfurt either. Facundo Pellistri looks destined for relegation with Granada while Hannibal Mejbri has faced his fair share of criticism at Sevilla.
