Ole Gunnar Solskjaer calls Harry Maguire a ‘disgrace’ during Man Utd treatment

Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has thrown his support behind defender Harry Maguire, who he signed and made captain during his time at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has defended Harry Maguire, calling the “abuse” the Manchester United star is receiving a “disgrace”.

Solskjaer was in charge when United signed Maguire from Leicester for £80m in 2019, a move which made him the most expensive defender of all time. Solskjaer also made him captain just five months after Maguire’s arrival, with the Norwegian impressed by both his leadership qualities and his performances.

However, Maguire has struggled with form in recent seasons and was stripped of the captaincy by Erik ten Hag last summer after falling behind Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof in the pecking order.

England manager Gareth Southgate has maintained faith in the 30-year-old despite his lack of minutes for United and launched a fiery defense of Maguire after he was jeered by Scotland fans after coming on as a substitute in England’s 3-1 win England.

“I’ve never seen a player treated like that – not by Scotland fans, but by our own commentators, pundits, whatever it is,” Southgate said. “They’ve created something beyond anything I’ve ever seen.

“He’s been an absolute pillar for us in the second most successful English team in decades and he’s been a big part of that. I’ve talked about the importance of our senior players and every time he takes the pitch, the resilience he shows Shows .” , the balls he shows are absolutely incredible.”

And Solskjaer echoed Southgate’s comments, telling the Athletic: “Harry Maguire – it’s a shame he gets so much abuse. I feel sorry for him but he’s a strong boy and I hope things change for him.”

He really strengthened our defense when he arrived and created a positive atmosphere in the room.” United accepted an offer from West Ham for Maguire this summer but the move ultimately fell through and the defender says he is determined to fight for his place at the Old Trafford club

We just couldn’t understand it and they were happy for me to stay and I was happy to fight for my place,” Maguire explained when asked why the move didn’t go through. “I want to do this and every time I train or play I will give everything.”

“I know the moment I wasn’t in the starting lineup for the first four games of the season, the story comes to mind. So I have to continue to perform if I am selected. Look, in club football I want to play games. The first four weeks were difficult because it was one game a week and the manager didn’t pick me, but we have a lot of games to play now and I’m sure I will play a lot of games.
