On This Day: Van Persie BROKE A BONE when celebrating; Rooney reached Utd record

Hi all, welcome to All Footballā€™s On This Day! Letā€™s find out what happened today (January 21st) in football history. If you have more stories and news that happened on this day in history, please post them in the comment area and share them with AFers!

On This Day in 2017 ā€“ Rooney Broke Man United Goals Record

On 21st January 2017, Rooney netted for the 250th time in a United shirt against Stoke City, surpassing Sir Bobby Charltonā€™s total.

Wayne Rooney has become Manchester Unitedā€™s greatest goalscorer of all time by netting for the 250th time in the 1-1 draw against Stoke City.

The 31-year-old scored in the 94th minute of the clash at the Britannia Stadium, lashing home a wonderful last-gasp free-kick to tie the scores as United looked destined for defeat.

It took him past Sir Bobby Charltonā€™s tally of 249, set between 1956 and 1973, with Rooney having reached the record in just 546 games for the club.

ā€œItā€™s an honour and Iā€™m very proud,ā€ he told BBC Sport after the 1-1 draw against Stoke. ā€œItā€™s difficult at the minute to be over pleased because of the result.

On This Day in 2007 ā€“ A Ridiculous Memory for Arsenal & Man Utd Fans

On 21 January 2007, Arsenal staged a dramatic comeback win against Man Utd at the Emirates, but the Gunners paid a steep price for the three points (and in a ridiculous fashion).

United entered the match at the top of the table, 15 pts clear of 4th-place Arsenal, and were looking to avenge their 0-1 loss to the Gunners from September. United had their chances in the first half but were repeatedly denied by Arsenal keeper Lehmann. They took a deserved lead in the second half, however, when forward Rooney scored with an unmarked header in the 59th minute.

The Gunners continued to attack and received an 83rd-minute equalizer from striker Van Persie, who had come on in the 67th minute. Ten minutes later, with United visibly tired and frustrated, Thierry Henry headed in the game-winner.

Arsenalā€™s joy at the win was dampened when it was later revealed that van Persie broke a bone in his foot while celebrating his goal. The season-ending injury was a crushing blow, as the Dutchman was the Gunnersā€™ leading scorer at the time. Arsenal won only 8 of their next 23 matches in all competitions and finished the season without any silverware.

On This Day in 1996 ā€“ HBD to Marco Asensio!

On 21 January 1996, Marco Asensio was born.

Arsensio is a Spanish professional footballer who plays as a winger and attacking midfielder for Real Madrid and the Spain national team.

After starting out at Mallorca, he signed with Real Madrid in November 2014, being consecutively loaned to his former club as well as Espanyol. Upon his return, he went on to win several honours, including two Champions League trophies.

Asensio made his senior debut for Spain in 2016. He represented the nation at the 2018 World Cup.

On This Day in 1989 ā€“ HBD to Henrikh Mkhitaryan!

Mkhitaryan plays mainly as an attacking midfielder, but can also be deployed as a wide midfielder. Born in Yerevan, Mkhitaryan began his senior career at local club at age 17, and was instrumental in the sideā€™s success in domestic competition. His success caught the attention of Ukrainian side Metalurh Donetsk, where he remained for a singular season before transferring to Shakhtar Donetsk in 2010, for a fee of ā‚¬6.1 million.

His exploits in Ukraine eventually attracted Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund, who signed the player after protracted negotiations for a club-record fee of ā‚¬27.5 million, making him the most expensive Armenian player of all time. However, after again featuring as a runner-up in the Bundesliga, Mkhitaryan relocated to England to join Manchester United in a deal worth Ā£30 million (ā‚¬34.3 million), becoming the first Armenian to play in the Premier League.

Mkhitaryan has been a member of the senior side in his native country since 2007. He is Armeniaā€™s all-time top goalscorer, scoring 26 goals in 80 international matches, as well as registering their first hat-trick. He has been named Armenian Footballer of the Year seven times, being awarded the distinction every year since 2009 (with the exception of 2010).

On This Day in 2018 ā€“ A GOLAZO Scored by aā€¦ Goalkeeper!

There can hardly be anything more joyful than winning a match for your team. But when you are a goalkeeper and you win it by scoring goal, it is no more a normal thing.

It was a similar night for Lugoā€™s goalkeeper Juan Carlos in a Segunda Division clash against Sporting Gijon on Sunday. The goalkeeper, who had never scored a goal in his pro career, scored a screamer from 60 yards to seal the game for his team.

Oh! And it is his birthday today too, happy birthday too! What was even more worthy was the fact that it was his 30th birthday!

You can enjoy his wonderful GOLAZO here:

On This Day in 1997 ā€“ Legend Peter Shilton Hung up His Gloves

On 21 January 1997, goalkeeper Peter Shilton played in his last match, setting the current League record of 1,005 appearances.

HBAgency

Shilton, who set the England cap record at 125 seven years earlier, started his club career in 1966 with Leicester City, where he soon ousted Englandā€™s World Cup-winning keeper Gordon Banks. He went on to make 286 appearances for Leicester before leaving for Stoke City in 1974. There, he added another 110 appearances to his total, then moved on to Nottingham Forest (202), Southampton (188), and Derby County (175).

By the time he left Derby in 1992, his career was in decline, but he made another 34 appearances in three seasons for Plymouth Argyle. Between 1994 and 1996, he spent brief periods with Wimbledon, Bolton Wanderers, West Ham, and Coventry, but played in only a single League match for the lot of them.

In 1996, he joined Leyton Orient, where he made his last nine appearances. The final one was a Division Three contest at home against Wigan, but it wasnā€™t a storybook ending for the 47-year old Shilton. The hosts took a first half lead with a goal from Scott McGleish (33ā€²), but surrendered late strikes to Ian Kilford (62ā€²) and Graeme Jones (77ā€²) to lose 1-2.
