Ruben Amorim considered dropping major goalkeeper ahead of Sunday’s crucial Premier League clash against Newcastle

According to the report on Daily Mail sports.

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is reportedly considering a major goalkeeping change ahead of Sunday’s crucial Premier League clash against Newcastle, with Andre Onana’s place in the starting lineup under serious threat.

Onana endured a nightmare performance in Thursday’s Europa League draw against Lyon, committing costly mistakes that led to both of the French side’s goals. His most glaring error came in stoppage time when he gifted Lyon a dramatic equalizer, leaving United frustrated with a 2-2 result. In light of these struggles, Amorim is weighing up the option of starting backup goalkeeper Altay Bayindir at St James’ Park.

The United boss hinted at potential squad rotations, emphasizing the need for a competitive lineup that can secure three points against Newcastle. “We have to face Newcastle with a team that can be competitive to win the game,” Amorim stated. “Sometimes winning games is the best way to prepare for the next one. Of course, I will be careful with some players, but we need to be competitive.”

Despite his public backing of Onana, Amorim’s decision could mark a turning point for the Cameroonian goalkeeper, whose performances have come under increasing scrutiny this season. United striker Joshua Zirkzee, who thought he had sealed victory with a late header against Lyon before Onana’s mistake, defended his teammate on Friday, insisting that the squad remains behind him.

However, with United needing a strong response after their European disappointment, Amorim’s potential shake-up could signal a shift in approach. If Bayindir is given the nod against Newcastle, it could be a defining moment in the ongoing battle for United’s No. 1 spot.
