The United boss was dealt another fresh injury concern over the weekend after Lisandro Martinez was ruled out for Saturday’s match at Turf Moor. His absence gave Jonny Evans the opportunity to start at centre-back alongside Victor Lindelof.

The Northern Ireland international was denied a fairytale return to the club after his goal was ruled out for offside due to Rasmus Holjund’s positioning in front of the keeper.

The Red Devils triumphed over Vincent Kompany’s side after captain Fernandes struck a wonderful volley home from a long ball over the defence, provided by the returning Jonny Evans in his 2ooth appearance for United – also his first since the 2014/15 season.

Ten Hag’s side were the better side on the day, although the performance was not entirely convincing, perhaps mitigated by the huge number of injuries to the side. Nevertheless, it was much-needed win after a brutal run of three losses in their four league games.

United started the game with attempts to create chances with sustained pressure and passing but were more effective with a quicker, direct approaches such as that leading to their excellent winner on the cusp of half-time.

Burnley struggled to get into advanced positions with any consistency until late, when the Red’s opted to sit deeper and prioritise protecting their own penalty box.

Mason Mount is expected to return ahead of the tie at Old Trafford, while Harry Maguire is pushing for fitness. Sergio Reguilon has been battling illness but hopes to feature against Palace. Lisandro Martinez’ fitness is unknown and he is unlikely to be risked in an early round game.

Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are still sidelined with injury and will not feature, forcing Ten Hag to avoid resting his loanee full-back or Dalot. If Reguilon is not able to start, Sofyan Amrabat may be used at left-back, where he provided some cover from the bench on Saturday evening.

Altay Bayindir is likely to debut after his summer transfer from Fenerbahce.
