McAteer, refraining from revealing the player’s identity, indicated that there’s a belief within the team that Erik ten Hag may not continue as the manager beyond this season. Ten Hag’s second season at United has faced challenges, leading to speculation about his future, especially after a recent home defeat to Arsenal.
Following this defeat, United’s chances of securing European football are at risk. Another loss against Newcastle could further complicate matters, leaving them reliant on winning the FA Cup final against Manchester City for European qualification next season. McAteer, speaking on beIN Sports, shared insights from a conversation with a United player suggesting that a managerial change might be imminent as reported by The mail.
“We got into conversation, and I asked him about the end of the season and what he thought. He gave me no inclination that the manager was there to stay. In fact, we spoke about different names and who we thought would be a good fit,” McAteer explained.
When questioned about the positive reaction from the player regarding a potential new manager, McAteer hinted at Gareth Southgate. However, he clarified on social media that his conclusion was based on his assumptions and not direct information from any Manchester United player.
In response to the speculation, Gareth Southgate emphasized his focus on England’s upcoming Euro 2024 campaign, stating that managerial rumors wouldn’t distract him. Meanwhile, Ten Hag addressed concerns about his own future, highlighting the challenges faced due to injuries within the squad.
