A late goal by new signing Joshua Zirkzee earned Manchester United a nervy 1-0 victory over Fulham in their Premier League season opener at Old Trafford on Friday.

Home supporters were in buoyant mood ahead of the first game of the English top-flight campaign, with four players unveiled on the pitch and new faces in the United boardroom also in attendance.
Just as they did at home for much of last season, however, United struggled to break down their opponents in the first half, with captain Bruno Fernandes going closest to scoring the opener.
Frustrations grew after the break, only for Dutch substitute Zirkzee to arrive right on cue three minutes from time to earn United victory.
“To win here in my first home game and to grab a goal, it couldn’t be better,” Zirkzee told Sky Sports.
“I’ve been told (scoring at the Stretford End) is one of the best feelings at Man United. I’m so thankful and blessed I could experience it in my first game. It’s an amazing feeling.
“Manchester United is a huge club. You should always strive for the best. It’s all good vibes.”
Without a Premier League title since 2013 and having addressed key problem areas in the transfer market, United supporters are expecting better than their eighth-placed finish last term.
A smart save from goalkeeper Andre Onana kept an early curling Kenny Tete effort out while Fernandes was presented with two golden opportunities but was denied by Fulham keeper Bernd Leno.
Midfielder Mason Mount, handed a starting spot after an injury-ravaged first season in Manchester, went close early in the second half.
More wayward passing led to groans from supporters, however, before despair turned to jubilation at the death when substitutes Alejandro Garnacho and Zirkzee combined to create the winner.
United have more wins and more points from their opening games of Premier League campaigns than any other team, but this performance suggested there is still much to be done for manager Erik ten Hag.
“Subs are always important and it was good to see in the first game that you bring a sub on and he scores the winner,” Ten Hag said.
“Against Fulham it is always a difficult game, but we defended and pressed very well. After 10 minutes we found our spell in the game and we kept them under pressure. We created a lot of chances and we should have scored earlier and that is the only criticism of the team – kill in the box.”
Fulham manager Marco Silva was disappointed to take nothing from the match.
“It is really tough for us to lose this game the way we lost,” he said.
“We started really well, after 20 minutes good reaction from Man United. We adjusted at halftime and the second half was much better. When you play against Manchester United…there were moments and we had to punish them.”

Manchester United have signed Dutch centre back Matthijs de Ligt and Morocco full back Noussair Mazraoui from German side Bayern Munich on a contract until June 2029 and June 2028, respectively, the Premier League club announced on Tuesday.
The financial details were not disclosed by either club, but British media reported that the pair were signed for a combined fee of more than 50 million pounds ($64.32 million), as per Reuters reports.
The contract includes the option to extend for a further year for both players, United said.
The pair started their youth careers at Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam and went on to play under now-United manager Erik ten Hag in the first team.
The 25-year-old De Ligt won the Eredivisie in the 2018-19 season with Ajax, the Serie A title in 2019-20 with Juventus and the Bundesliga in 2022-23 with Bayern.
“Erik ten Hag shaped the early stages of my career, so he knows how to get the best out of me and I cannot wait to work with him again,” De Ligt said in a statement.
“I know what it takes to succeed at the highest level, and I’m determined to continue that record at this special club.”
Mazraoui, 26, joined Bayern from Ajax in 2022 and went on to make 55 appearances across all competitions, winning the Bundesliga and the DFL-Supercup in his debut campaign. He was briefly sidelined by injury last season.
“Erik ten Hag played an important part in my development as a player, so it is exciting to be reuniting with him as I enter the prime years of my career,” Mazraoui said.
“I know what he expects from his players, and I will give everything to help the group be successful.”

“Football has become boring” is a sentiment you might hear now and then, and it’s not exactly a controversial opinion. This view has been gaining traction in recent years, and there are reasons behind it.
If you compare football today with the game from a decade or so ago, some noticeable differences emerge. In the modern era, we see top teams taking fewer long-range shots, wingers challenging defenders less frequently, a decline in trickery and flair, and an overwhelming focus on minimizing errors.
Think back to Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona with their iconic tiki-taka football, Arsène Wenger’s beautifully passing Arsenal side, or Brazil’s dribble-heavy teams of the past. These styles now feel like relics from another era. And funny enough, one of the central figures in this shift is a name already mentioned, Pep Guardiola.
Guardiola’s current team, Manchester City, is a dominant force. At the time of writing, they had won their league title four times in a row and other trophies, including the UEFA Champions League. Yet, there’s growing criticism regarding how this team plays.
Guardiola has implemented a highly structured system at City, where players are expected to stick to their positions and execute specific roles, with only a select few granted creative freedom.
Take Jack Grealish, for example. At Aston Villa, Grealish was the star, free to roam the pitch and express himself. But at City, he has transformed into a ball-retaining winger, far less flashy and almost ‘robotic.’
This sense of rigidity isn’t unique to Grealish; fans often describe many City players as overly mechanical.
They play to serve the system. However, the system also delivers results—winning games and trophies. Football, at its core, is a results-driven business, so it’s no surprise that managers and clubs will adopt whatever methods lead to success.
Because Guardiola’s system is so effective, other teams have begun to emulate it, often with slight variations. This results in a league where many teams seem like clones of one another. When you fight fire with fire, the outcome can be predictable and, perhaps, less thrilling.
But Guardiola isn’t the only one influencing this trend. When Antonio Conte won the Premier League with Chelsea using a three-at-the-back system, the following season saw a significant rise in teams adopting the same formation. Essentially, whenever a new style or system proves successful, other teams quickly follow suit, leading to a homogenization of tactics.
Another factor contributing to the perceived decline in entertainment is the growing emphasis on statistics. In the past, players like Neymar and Ronaldinho were encouraged to try tricks and take on defenders, even if it meant losing the ball occasionally. Nowadays, players like these are rare. The reason? The more you attempt tricks, the higher the risk of losing possession, which in turn increases the likelihood of conceding a goal.
Consequently, teams are now more cautious, taking fewer chances, whether it’s shooting from a distance or attempting risky passes unless the opportunity is almost guaranteed.
So, does this mean football has become boring? Not necessarily. In today’s game, defensive midfielders and fullbacks do far more than just defend; they play crucial roles in build-up play and chance creation.
The evolution of these positions is anything but dull. And because so many teams now rely on similar playing styles, wingers and other creative players become even more vital. Their flair and unpredictability can break the deadlock in tightly contested matches.
Players today are also more technically proficient, forced to adapt and excel as the game continues to evolve. What worked in the past may not be effective now, so players are constantly pushed to do more.
Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona of the past is often celebrated as one of the greatest football teams of all time, renowned for their free-flowing tiki-taka style. However, even Guardiola has had to evolve his tactics over the years. Why? Because the sport itself is constantly evolving.
As teams eventually adapt and find ways to counter your strategies, staying ahead of the competition means continuously adjusting and refining your approach.
In truth, football tactics operate in cycles. Different styles dominate until they are figured out and countered, leading to the next evolution in the game. Football is a sport in constant flux, and while some may miss the artistry of the past, others appreciate the sophistication of the present. Whether that makes the game more or less entertaining is subjective, but one thing is sure: football is constantly changing.

Barcelona hope the stunning rise of teenage sensation Lamine Yamal will elevate a talented young squad under the guidance of new manager Hansi Flick and help them regain the LaLiga title from a star-studded Real Madrid.
Yamal turned 17 a day before Spain beat England in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin last month, the electrifying winger terrorising defences throughout the tournament and fuelling hopes of a brighter future for struggling Barca.
Last season was one of turmoil for Barca, finishing second and 10 points behind champions Real in the league and sacking club legend Xavi Hernandez as manager in controversial fashion.
The club then appointed 59-year-old Flick as coach, tasking the former Germany and Bayern Munich manager with getting the best out of a squad featuring a mix of exciting young talent and seasoned veterans like Robert Lewandowski and Ilkay Gundogan.
Flick, who had been out of management since being sacked by Germany in September 2023, must revive a side that failed to win a single trophy in Xavi’s final season in charge.
Flick has a mammoth task on his hands to overpower a Real side who added France captain Kylian Mbappe to a squad that already boasts the likes of Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham.
Deepening financial issues have forced Barca to get creative to stay competitive within the restrictions of LaLiga’s Financial Fair Play rules but they finalised the signing of attacking midfielder Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig last week.
Alongside Lamine, the versatile Olmo was central to Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, finishing as one the tournament’s top scorers with three goals and one of six Spain players in UEFA’s team of the tournament.
Young Barcelona players were also key to Spain’s success at the Paris Olympics, with teenage defender Pau Cubarsi and attacking midfielder Fermin Lopez helping the country to the gold medal.
Lopez finished with six goals at the tournament, including a double in their 5-3 win against France in the final.
Other rising stars like Pedri and Gavi could also flourish under Flick while Gundogan’s leadership, Lewandowski’s consistency and goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s safe pair of hands will bring some much needed experience.
“I know how demanding this job can be, Barcelona are an incredible club and I have been enjoy every second working here. The reception has been incredible,” Flick told a press conference last week.
“I sincerely believe that we are on the right track and want us to enjoy together.”
Barca start their LaLiga campaign on Saturday at Valencia.

Premier League champions Manchester City beat FA Cup winners Manchester United 7-6 on penalties to win the Community Shield at Wembley on Saturday after the traditional season curtain-raiser finished level at 1-1.
Erik ten Hag’s side looked on course to repeat their shock victory over City in the FA Cup final when Alejandro Garnacho put United ahead after 82 minutes, but City midfielder Bernardo Silva netted a minute from time to send the match to penalties, as per Reuters reports.
City defender Manuel Akanji scored the decisive spot-kick after Silva had earlier missed in the shootout. United centre back Jonny Evans and winger Jadon Sancho failed to convert their penalties in the shootout.
United thought they had taken the lead soon after halftime when captain Bruno Fernandes beat goalkeeper Ederson with a stunning finish from distance, but the effort was disallowed for offside.
Substitute Garnacho ran through the City defence to slide the ball into the bottom corner of the net before Silva converted Oscar Bobb’s from close range to send the game to a shootout.
City won the trophy for the first time since 2019 to end a run of defeats in Community Shield matches, following losses to Arsenal last season, Liverpool in 2022 and Leicester City in 2021.
“I enjoyed the season against our rival in Manchester and to start the season with a title is good. We are really pleased,” City manager Pep Guardiola told ITV.
“We lost a lot of balls, after transitions they are one of the best teams in the world. They are so dangerous to control. But in the end, we did it.
“It is nice to play this game because it means you won something in the previous season… The target now is not to win the Premier League, it is ‘OK next game try and win it’. This is what we have to do.”
City’s England players Phil Foden, Kyle Walker and John Stones as well as Spain midfielder Rodri were unavailable for selection, leading Guardiola to field an unfamiliar line-up with four academy players starting.
Their young side dominated possession after a slow start, however, with United’s sloppy play handing the first chance of the game to youngster James McAtee who struck the post.
“Tough result to take. When the performance is right, when you lose everyone feels this. It hurts in your stomach. You have to feel pain and we have to hurt. We have to take this belief into the league,” Ten Hag told ITV.
“We managed to be on an equal level with Man City… We created chances, we got pressure in the ball and in possession we had some very good chances from this so there are many positives we can take.”
City begin their quest for a fifth consecutive Premier League title at Chelsea on Aug. 18, while United start their campaign at home to Fulham on Friday.
