Truth Revealed: Why PSG are willing to sell Manuel Ugarte to Man Utd at all cost

French football expert Jonathan Johnson provided insights into the Manuel Ugarte transfer to Manchester United in his latest Daily Briefing column for CaughtOffside.

According to Caughtoffside, Ugarte, the Uruguayan international, has shown flashes of brilliance but struggled to find consistent form at PSG, eventually falling out of favor with Luis Enrique before being allowed to leave the club. Johnson believes Ugarte will thrive in the Premier League due to his athleticism and work ethic in the defensive midfield role.

While Ugarte’s profile did not align well with Enrique’s tactical preferences at PSG, Johnson anticipates that PSG may regret letting him go. A future manager might view the squad differently and find value in Ugarte’s qualities.

Johnson commented: “Manuel Ugarte to Manchester United is now very close, and this was a priority for PSG as one of their key departures from the start of the transfer window. It’s also been a priority for Manchester United, given his position and profile,” he said.

“This move seems to suit all parties. Since Luis Enrique’s arrival at PSG, it has been clear there isn’t much room for Ugarte or players of his type. However, Ugarte has proven to be a player of significant quality.”

Johnson noted that Ugarte has demonstrated his best form with the Uruguay national team and occasionally with PSG, emphasizing his role as a traditional defensive midfielder with the physical ability to cover ground effectively. He could be a long-term successor to someone like Casemiro at United.

“I think Ugarte’s profile is well-suited to the Premier League, and he will relish the physical demands of English football. He is well-prepared for this league due to his fitness and playing style,” Johnson added.

He questioned why PSG is letting Ugarte go, suggesting that while Enrique’s current midfield setup with players like new signing Joao Neves may not miss Ugarte immediately, a future managerial change could prompt PSG to reconsider their decision.

“Enrique is building his own team with his preferred style, but given the frequent changes in management, PSG might eventually wonder if keeping Ugarte or loaning him with an option to buy would have been beneficial if a new manager had a different vision.”

Johnson concluded that PSG is content with the deal, which should see Ugarte join Manchester United before the transfer window closes. Ugarte is expected to embrace this new opportunity, making it a mutually beneficial arrangement for all involved.
