Manchester United need a win against Fulham at Craven Cottage in the Premier League this weekend. United lost successive home games 3-0 against Manchester City and a weakened Newcastle in the space of just a few days and the pressure is mounting on Erik ten Hag to get results after an awful start to the season.
A late goal from youngster Alejandro Garnacho in added time was needed to win 2-1 against Fulham away from home last season. Marco Silva’s side are slowly coming into form after enduring a poor start themselves.
Regarding the team news, United will be without Casemiro, who is set to be sidelined for ‘several weeks’ with a hamstring injury and Victor Lindelof misses out due to illness. Raphael Varane makes the bench.
Ten Hag also branded Marcus Rashford ‘unacceptable’ for attending a birthday party hours after the derby defeat and the forward has apologised. Rashford was due to start the game but is not involved due to injury.

United should be fuming
United have every right to be fuming at that. We are oblivious as to what the thought process was there was there’s no communication whatsoever, but one assumes it is because Maguire, who looked offside, went for the ball.
Only he wasn’t getting it and neither was his marker. United were hard done by there.

VAR has checked the goal and it’s been disallowed for offside.
Maguire was judged in an offside position and he tried to play the ball.

GOAL! 1-0 UNITED!
McTominay is inevitable at this point and he taps a ball in at the back post from a free-kick.
Garnacho played the ball across goal and it was a simple finish.

Midfield presence lacking
It already feels like United’s best hopes will come on the break today, with little presence in midfield so far. They have looked comfortable playing out from the back but are coming unstuck as soon as they cross the halfway line.

Vocal away support
All you can hear is the away support at Craven Cottage and they deserve to see a proper display.

That looked concerning
How Maguire went down was an immediate concern. There is clear swelling on his head already but the United doctor Gary O’Driscoll was very thorough in doing the checks and spoke to the referee after he had finished applying some treatment.

Maguire will continue
Maguire has received treatment and he looks set to continue for now.

Maguire is down
That is dreadful luck for United. Maguire has gone down and looks faint, rather than injured. Hopefully he can continue but they can’t be taking any risks.

Beautiful day
It’s a beautiful day in west London now after a drizzly start. The walk along the Thames was not as picturesque as there is a fairground in the middle of Bishops Park to capitalise on half-term. Purists will never tire of the stroll from Putney Bridge station to Craven Cottage and there are a couple of watering holes by the tube station that United’s travelling supporters will have taken over.
A new banner or bedsheet is always handy for an intro. United fans unfurled a banner bearing the faces of Robson, Keane and Cantona a couple of years ago accompanied by the word ‘standards’. Cristiano Ronaldo restored them that night against Arsenal.

United looked sharp
United looked sharp in their shooting drills, but not so much in a crossing one that is now taking place. The full-backs are being asked to whip crosses into the box, while two or three forwards at a time then attack the ball. It could be an indication of United’s plans to play on the counter-attack today.

Another big day for Hojlund
We say it every match, but it is another big day for Rasmus Hojund. Given how irrelevant Anthony Martial has become, he was always going to start today, but unless he starts scoring goals, it might not be such a certainty.
It is right that expectations need to be eased on the youngster, though he ultimately needs to start playing better to justify his starting role. A first domestic goal would help too.

Team news leaks
Under previous United managers, team news leaks emerged well in advance of kick-off, sometimes the day before matchday.
Under Ten Hag, concrete team news is cropping up within 15 minutes of kick-off. Teams are handed in 15 minutes before kick-off.
Given this is happening at home and away games, United do not need George Smiley to conduct an investigation. Someone is obtaining access to teamsheets and their first port of call is to inform a Twitter account.

Ten Hag gives Rashford update
Erik ten Hag has confirmed Marcus Rashford failed a late fitness test to be involved in United’s game against Fulham.
United take on Fulham in the Premier League in the early kick-off on Saturday afternoon and although Rashford travelled with the squad to Craven Cottage, he’s not been named in the starting team and he’s not on the bench.
Rashford is absent from the squad despite being present with the team at Fulham and he’ll watch the game from the stands.

Rashford is injured
Rashford’s injury would account for his withdrawn demeanour at Stockport Station and belated disembarkment from the team coach at Craven Cottage. This has been a bad week in a bad season for the forward and the international break cannot come soon enough for him – provided he is selected.
Rashford excelled against Scotland in September and scored against Italy in October. He may benefit from more England escapism.

Summer business wasn’t great
That United side is a damning reflection of their summer transfer business, even if money was tight. Amrabat was loaned, but McTominay is the defensive midfielder. Reguilon was loaned, but Dalot is the left-back. Mount was the top midfield target, but he starts on the bench. Evans was signed as emergency cover and has already started more matches than anyone expected he would.
11:34SAMUEL LUCKHURST
Evans starts again
That is another dubious United side, with Jonny Evans preferred over Raphael Varane again. Dalot is fortunate to start after his midweek performance and so is the ineffectual Antony.
Mason Mount, Sofyan Amrabat and Sergio Reguilon, three summer signings, have been dropped.

Rashford not in squad
Well, how about that, then?! Marcus Rashford misses out through injury and Raphael Varane is on the bench again. The centre-back partnership of Evans and Maguire might have worked in gritty wins over Brentford and Sheffield United, but it was torn apart against City last weekend. It’s another huge call from the underpressure United manager.

This is a beautiful ground
One has to admire Fulham’s refusal to remove the wooden seats in the Johnny Haynes Stand. They look like they have been here since the end of the Second World War. One wouldn’t want it any other way.
This is a beautiful ground and the Riverside Stand opposite us looks impressive. That’s another club investing in enhancing their stadium. One downside is there are two black blocks in the corners now, blocking the view of the River Thames.

Rashford to step up?
When the chips are down, you need your biggest players to step up. Rashford needs to respond to his critics on the pitch today and Varane needs to prove he is still the best centre-back at the club. It is a huge test of character and leadership in this United side.

Fulham’s awful record
Fulham have won just three of their 32 Premier League games against United.
They’re also winless in 15 league meetings since December 2009 (D3, L12).

Eriksen could be needed
Christian Eriksen grabbed a goal and an assist on United’s last trip to Craven Cottage and his playmaking expertise could be crucial again this lunchtime. The midfield has been a real problem all season, though in games when there is pressure to breakdown opponents, the Danish international still brings real value to the squad.

Ten Hag on Rashford made headlines
Ten Hag’s quotes on Rashford have made the back page slash in every national newspaper that had presence at Carrington yesterday. It was bound to.
Given how poor Garnacho was in midweek, the assumption is Rashford will come back into the team today. With the midfield, it could be a selection from a tombola. Ten Hag has got five to pick from, minus Casemiro.
Varane has to start today as Lindelof has not travelled due to illness. Lindelof, Martinez, Shaw and Malacia are today’s absent back four.
10:13SAMUEL LUCKHURST
Rashford needs to improve
Rashford’s body language has been an issue all season and even at Stockport Station yesterday it was noticeable. There is one picture of Rashford sitting on a bench, hands stuffed into his pockets, while players and staff mingle elsewhere.
Some will dismiss the overanalysis but the timing, given Ten Hag said his behaviour on Sunday evening was “unacceptable” a couple of hours earlier, cannot be dismissed.
If Rashford starts today, United need a performance from a player whose removal against City was cheered by plenty of fans.

Dalot or Reguilon?
It will be interesting to see who is selected at left-back today, with Wan-Bissaka surely in line to start on the right. Dalot was dreadful in midweek, but there is still an argument that he should be starting ahead of Reguilon in that role.

Ten Hag on player mood
Ten Hag insisted the mood is positive at his pre-match press conference.
He said: “They [players] are positive. They want to put this right and we know the standards here. We have to match them every day, we’ve had two big setbacks, but we’ll fight back. The dressing room is strong, the staff are strong and this manager is strong.”

Silva gives verdict on Ten Hag
Fulham manager Marco Silva is confident Erik ten Hag will come out of this difficult spell.
“He had a very good impact last season, everyone recognised the impact he made at that football club,” Silva explained in his press conference. “Some ups and downs can happen, they didn’t start so well but had a good run.
“As a manager, there is always pressure behind you and when you are in a bigger club the pressure is big. It’s not the first time he is in a big club, he was in a big club [Ajax] in the past as well and he knows how to handle the situation.”

United get Varane boost
Raphael Varane has travelled with the United squad to Fulham this afternoon.
Varane missed the midweek League Cup defeat to Newcastle United through illness but he is fit again and is set to start at Craven Cottage.
But Lindelof, who has started in 10 of United’s last 12 games, could miss the game as he is unwell.

How United should line up vs Fulham
It’s a huge boost to have Varane and Wan Bissaka starting together again. They are half of the first-choice back four and the latter is likely to play after Dalot’s performance against Newcastle.
But what should the remainder of the starting team look like?

United stance on City interest in Mainoo
United are relaxed about City’s long-standing interest in youngster Kobbie Mainoo.
Mainoo joined the club’s academy aged nine and he went to both United and City’s academies when he was a child.
The Manchester Evening News understands Mainoo chose to join United’s academy and although City have attempted to lure him away at ages when it would have been possible, he’s chosen to stay each time.
