Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag was applauded by the travelling fans following his side’s 0-0 draw with Aston Villa on Sunday.

United have made their worst ever start to a Premier League campaign this season and Ten Hag has come under huge pressure, with reports claiming that Thomas Tuchel is being lined up to potentially replace him at the helm.

The Red Devils have picked up just eight points from seven league games and only winless Southampton have scored less goals than United’s five. However, when Ten Hag went over to applaud the away fans after the final whistle at Villa Park they applauded him back.

The Dutchman was joined by his assistant and club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy, who returned to Old Trafford over the summer, and the former striker had his name sung by supporters. Should United decide to sack Ten Hag then Van Nistelrooy would be another candidate to replace him.

However, Ten Hag insists he is not concerned about his future and said he has been in regular contact with club chiefs. “I don’t have any idea that is different because they should have told me,” he told reporters.

“We communicate – very open, very transparent. I would say every day we talk, so I expect I will speak with them. [It is] external noise. Internal, we are disappointed. We know we have to do better.

“Especially, we need to score more, in this moment, after this block of games [that is] where we are really short. All the other areas, we are doing really well, four clean sheets. That tells you something about our defending over the season.

“Defensive transitions we are doing really well. Our build-up play is good, we are calm, composed, creating chances apart from today. Today we should have created more. That area in the box, we have to be more ruthless, more clinical, more killing.”
