You must step up your games or step aside if you really want to play in my team – Ruben Amorim tell Manchester United players
According to a report by Manchester Evening News, Ruben Amorim is preparing to take charge of Manchester United, with his first match set to take place later this month against Ipswich in the Premier League.
Amorim has already demonstrated his tactical prowess with Sporting CP, and his recent 4-1 victory over Manchester City in the Champions League serves as a potential blueprint for United to follow when they face City next month.
Amorim’s Sporting side stunned City, thanks to a hat-trick from Viktor Gyokeres and a brilliant strike from Maximiliano Araujo. Although City controlled much of the first half, Sporting took over in the second, dominating and securing a well-deserved win.
With Amorim set to manage United during the November international break, his fifth match in charge will be against City at the Etihad.
While it is still six weeks away, Amorim has already provided United with a model for success against the reigning Premier League champions, and there is no reason why United cannot replicate that result.
City’s squad may be stronger, and the match will have the added intensity of a Manchester derby, but Amorim’s success with Sporting proves that United players have no excuse not to perform.
He has already beaten City with a team considered less talented than United, and there is little doubt that he will have more quality to work with at Old Trafford.
When comparing the two teams, there is only one or two players from Sporting who might make it into the United squad.
Viktor Gyokeres could replace Rasmus Hojlund, and Morten Hjulmand might provide an option in place of Casemiro, but overall, United possess a far stronger squad.
While Amorim will need time to implement his tactics at United, the Manchester derby will come over a month into his tenure, leaving ample time for preparation. Despite United’s difficult start to the season, they have the potential to defeat City.
Amorim’s Sporting team outplayed City in the second half, using intense football and tactical discipline. The wing-backs pushed high, the midfield stayed compact, and Gyokeres was clinical in front of goal.
However, Amorim downplayed expectations in his post-match comments, stating, “I already said previously you cannot transport one reality into another. At Manchester United you cannot play exactly like this.
You cannot play so defensively and so there we will have to adapt.” He acknowledged the challenge of facing Pep Guardiola’s City, admitting, “Clearly it is really difficult to beat this team and to beat Pep Guardiola.”
Despite Amorim’s cautious words, the recent defensive vulnerabilities displayed by City in their last few matches suggest that United may be able to exploit the same weaknesses that Sporting did, making this opportunity for a potential victory far from a “one-off.”
Outgoing Sporting CP head coach Ruben Amorim has addressed speculation surrounding Viktor Gyokeres’ potential transfer to Manchester United, urging the Swedish striker to remain at the club for the rest of the season, according to Metro.
Amorim’s emotional farewell was capped off with an impressive 4-1 Champions League victory over Manchester City, with Gyokeres stealing the show with a stunning hattrick. The win sparked rumors of Gyokeres following Amorim to Old Trafford, but the coach was quick to downplay the speculation.
When asked about a potential move for Gyokeres, Amorim replied, “I’ve just made peace with the Sporting fans, I’m not even going to make a joke about it. Gyokeres is a Sporting player, which is a great club, he did a lot for it, he was in the second division, he just has to stay and finish the season at Marques.”
In a separate interview, Amorim reiterated his stance, stating, “No, no, no. I cannot be funny with that in this moment. It was tough for me to leave, if I start joking about that with Gyokeres, I’ll have problems. This is my city, this is my country, I will respect. Viktor has to stay until the end of the season and then his life is going, maybe, somewhere else.”
Gyokeres, who has scored 66 goals in 67 games since joining Sporting CP from Coventry City in July 2023, has previously expressed interest in testing other leagues and higher levels. However, Amorim’s plea highlights the club’s desire to retain their star striker and maintain competitiveness.
The Swedish international was coy on his future, praising Amorim’s influence on his career. “We will miss him a lot, of course. We achieved a lot together and we will miss him and the other members of the staff, but they are leaving and we have to move on and face the next challenge we have.”
