Destiny Udogie suffers racial abuse

Tottenham have released a statement condemning the racial abuse received by one of their players following a match against Liverpool.

Spurs and Liverpool met in the Premier League on Saturday evening at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, with the home side winning 2-1 after a late own goal from Reds centre-half Joel Matip.

That tells little of the story of the game, however, with controversy reigning throughout, whilst an even sourer aspect around the match has now come to light, with Spurs full-back Destiny Udogie suffering racial abuse on social media following the match.

Destiny Udogie suffers racial abuse

“We are disgusted at the racist messages directed towards Destiny Udogie on social media following Saturday’s game against Liverpool.

“We will work with the Premier League and, where possible, take action against any individual we are able to identify.

“We stand with you, Destiny.”

Spurs v Liverpool shrouded in controversy

As mentioned, the game had a controversial tone with ‘human error’ ruling out a legitimate goal for the Reds.

Luis Diaz was adjudged to have been offside, when very clearly onside, following a misunderstanding between the VAR and the on-field officials.

Following the game, PGMOL released a statement to admit that a mistake had been made, though Liverpool have released their own statement saying that they will be looking at how further action can be taken on the matter:

‘PGMOL acknowledge a significant human error occurred during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool. The goal by Luiz Diaz was disallowed for offside by the on-field team of match officials’.

‘This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention, however, the VAR failed to intervene. PGMOL will conduct a full review into the circumstances which led to the error.’

Liverpool have reportedly asked for audio of communication between match officials during Saturday’s 2-1 defeat by Tottenham after they failed to overturn an incorrect decision to disallow a Luis Diaz goal.

The Premier League game in London was goalless at the time of the incident, in the 34th minute.

Colombia forward Diaz put the ball in the net but was wrongly flagged for offside. The video assistant referee (VAR), however, failed to overrule the decision.

Liverpool went on to suffer their first defeat of the season.

PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited), the governing body for referees, issued a statement on Saturday acknowledging a “significant error” had been made.

Liverpool put out their own statement the following day saying “sporting integrity has been undermined”.

The club said they would “explore the range of options available given the clear need for escalation and resolution”.

Now they are understood to have formally requested the audio of the conversation between the officials from the PGMOL.

Video assistant referee Darren England and his assistant VAR at Tottenham, Dan Cook, were stood down from duty for the rest of the weekend following the error.

On the day when Liverpool reportedly asked for audio of communication between match officials during Saturday’s 2-1 defeat by Spurs after they failed to overturn an incorrect decision to disallow a Luis Diaz goal, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said Antony could return in the Champions League tie at home to Galatasaray amid ongoing police inquiries into allegations of abuse against the Brazil international. Elsewhere, Beckham has laid bare the lingering pain he felt he caused to his family following the red card he received at the 1998 World Cup, saying his dismissal left him a mess. Former West Ham striker Carlton Cole has dismissed talk of Tottenham being title contenders.

Cole insists there’s evidence to suggest they’re a prospect this season.

He told talkSPORT: “There’s a little race on then, a little jog. A half-jog. I believe in Liverpool, I’ve seen the evidence. What kind of evidence is there for Spurs? What kind of race have they ever been in?!

“No disrespect, but I’ve never seen them in a race! There’s no evidence. Nobody records the 6th-place, 7th-place times.

“If you’re doing a 100m race, who bothers caring about who came 6th or 7th?”
