Tottenham Hotspur want to sign a quality central defender and have identified Victor Nelsson as a target.

A report via Fichajes claims that Tottenham are willing to pay the defender’s release clause to sign him during the January transfer window.

Nelsson has a thirty million euro release clause in his contract and at that price it could be a bargain. The Danish international defender demonstrated his qualities in the Turkish league with Galatasaray and could now look to take the next step in his career. The opportunity to join one of the Premier League’s top six clubs could be hard to turn down and Nelson will be attracted by the idea of playing for Tottenham during the second half of the season. Spurs have started the season very well and are currently undefeated in the league. They hope to win trophies and qualify for the Champions League. Signing a good defender in January could prove to be a wise decision and help them improve further.

Players such as Eric Dier have been linked with departures from the club and the England international could opt for a January move. The Spurs need to replace him appropriately, and Nelsson certainly fits that profile. The 24-year-old will likely improve with coaching and experience and could justify the €30 million investment over the next few seasons.

Brennan Johnson

It is hoped Johnson will be available again this weekend against Luton after Ange Postecoglou played down his recent absence.

The striker missed the weekend’s win after being sidelined for an hour with a hamstring injury in the previous match at Arsenal.

“It’s nothing too serious, but he won’t be good this week,” Postecoglou said ahead of the Liverpool game. Rodrigo Bentancur

Recent hype around Bentancur’s possible imminent return has been downplayed by Spurs, who are careful not to rush his return following a serious knee problem.

“There is no change,” the coach said. “All Rodrigo is doing at the moment is warming up with the teams, so he’s not doing it alone, but he hasn’t participated in any meaningful training yet.”

November is still considered his return date.

Bryan Gil

After missing the start of the season due to a groin injury that required surgery, Gil is reportedly close to returning to action.

The Spanish winger is reportedly back in training and will soon be available for selection. Ivan Perisic

Tottenham confirmed last week that Perisic had undergone surgery for a serious cruciate ligament injury.

The Croatian was photographed on crutches following surgery in Austria, ahead of a long road to recovery which is expected to take around six months.

Ryan Sessegnon

The left-back has taken a step forward in his recovery from his hamstring injury by resuming light training.

It is expected that he will still be several weeks away from being included in the squad, but given Perisic’s absence he will be welcomed back when he returns.

Giovani Lo Celso

After being left out of the Argentina national team last month, Lo Celso will be ruled out with a hamstring injury. With his absence now stretching over a month, reports suggest the midfielder will be out for at least a few more weeks.
