Bring him home Manchester United fans urge new coach not to repeat the same mistakes as his predisessor

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim made some revealing comments at the weekend about his desire to sign some of his ex-Sporting Lisbon players.

When asked if he could raid his former club, Amorim said he has a gentleman’s agreement not to buy any during the January transfer window but things could change in the summer:

“I won’t in January, that’s what I said. I don’t know about the summer. The first point – to hold on until the summer. Sporting’s players are very good players. I don’t know. We’ll see.”

When asked specifically about Pedro Goncalves, Amorim did not hide his admiration for the winger:

“He can play in any team in the world and with any player because he is a great player. I could take him anywhere. He is very funny, which improves the personal relationship. He is also very intelligent, but he also has to focus on Sporting because we have to be champions this year. But he could play in any team in the world.”

Fans on X are split on whether Amorim should be allowed to sign Goncalves, especially as former manager Erik ten Hag had tried a similar strategy:

How much would Goncalves cost?

The 26-year-old is believed to have an €80m (£67m) release clause in his contract and, considering he is one of Sporting’s best players, United would probably have to pay the amount in full.

Goncalves does generally play off the left flank, although he does drift into central areas, so he would probably be considered as a replacement for Marcus Rashford.

United are not the only Premier League club linked with the player

Aston Villa and West Ham have been mentioned as potential suitors for Goncalves over the past couple of weeks.

However, if United do come calling, Amorim’s close relationship with the winger could be the deciding factor in who he chooses to join.

New Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has been advised to bring in a familiar face to bolster his coaching staff, following the surprise departure of Ruud van Nistelrooy, according to Metro. Former Red Devils striker Louis Saha has urged Amorim to consider hiring Manchester United legend Roy Keane, citing his understanding of the game and competitiveness as invaluable assets.

Amorim’s decision to let Van Nistelrooy go, despite his successful stint as interim manager, has raised eyebrows. Rio Ferdinand and Saha have both expressed concerns about the move, highlighting the Dutchman’s potential value to the team.

Saha believes Keane’s influence would be significant, drawing from his experience as a player and coach. “If Roy Keane was brought into Ruben Amorim’s coaching staff, he would have a huge impact thanks to his understanding of the game in midfield, as well as the competitiveness that you need to have at Manchester United,” Saha explained.

Keane’s tough demeanor and high standards, which defined his playing career, could potentially ruffle feathers among modern players with big egos. However, Saha thinks Keane would adapt, citing his ability to evolve as a coach.

Amorim, meanwhile, is focused on assembling his backroom staff, with several Sporting Lisbon colleagues set to join him at Old Trafford. Carlos Fernandes, Adélio Candido, Paulo Barreira, Emanuel Ferro, and Jorge Vital are expected to be confirmed in the coming days.

While Amorim’s decision to bring in his own staff is understandable, Saha’s suggestion highlights the benefits of incorporating a Manchester United legend into the coaching setup. Keane’s knowledge of the club’s culture and history could prove invaluable in Amorim’s transition.

Keane himself has previously expressed doubts about returning to Manchester United, stating, “They’re not gonna ask me.” However, Saha’s endorsement may spark renewed speculation about a potential comeback.
