Jose Mourinho was left in tears after he was sacked by Roma on Tuesday morning following their miserable run of form.

Roma confirmed that Mourinho, alongside his coaching staff, were relieved of their duties with immediate effect after the Giallorossi were comfortably beaten by AC Milan at San Siro on Sunday – condemning Roma to a third league defeat in five games, leaving them 9th in the Serie A.

Despite becoming evidently frustrated as Roma boss towards the end of his spell, as he was sent off twice in three days, including in his penultimate game which was defeat against city rivals Lazio in the Coppa Italia, Roma and their fans still clearly hold a place in the Portuguese’s heart.

A video posted to social media saw a group of Roma fans thanking and saying goodbye to the popular Mourinho, who won the Conference League in 2019, as he left the club for the final time. The words from the fans pulled on the heartstrings of the 60-year-old who fought back the tears before he was driven away while the fans sang his name.

Meanwhile, with Mourinho’s seat still warm, Roma moved to appoint club legend Daniele De Rossi as manager until the end of the season. The 40-year-old played 616 games for his boyhood club across 18 years – only second to the iconic Francesco Totti. Barring a brief spell at Boca Juniors in Argentina after leaving Roma, their former captain was a one club man.

De Rossi’s first venture into coaching saw him become assistant manager of the Italian national team before he studied for his UEFA Pro License. In October, 2022, De Rossi made his first foray into management, taking charge of Serie B side Spal, but he was sacked just four months later with the club 18th in the table.

The 117-time Italy international takes just his second job as manager with the aim of securing European football for Roma with them currently five points behind Fiorentina in 4th place. The future for Mourinho remains open with all eyes set to be glued on where the former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur boss will end up next.

Roma’s decision to part ways with Mourinho comes on the heels of a challenging season, marked by seven losses in 20 Serie A games and an early exit from the Coppa Italia. Currently occupying the ninth spot in Serie A, Roma remains within striking distance of the Champions League spots, trailing fourth-placed Fiorentina by just five points.

Daniele De Rossi, with 616 appearances and 63 goals for the Giallorossi, holds the record for the club’s all-time appearance. His transition from a stellar playing career to coaching saw him guide Italy to Euro 2020 success. While his previous coaching stint with SPAL ended on a challenging note, De Rossi’s return to Roma’s dugout sparks anticipation and optimism for a resurgence in the remainder of the season.
