Manchester United’s transfer window has not burst into life yet but Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Erik ten Hag will be hoping that changes sooner rather than later.

PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte has become the latest player to be linked with a switch to Old Trafford this season. The Uruguayan is likely to cost United £50m and would arguably become Casemiro’s replacement if bought.

Meanwhile, Jean-Clair Todibo links to United continue. The Nice defender has been ruled out from joining the Reds this summer but there are reports that United might be looking to take further action to bring the Frenchman to the club.

Away from transfers and MEN Sport understands Ineos are weighing up the possibility of selling the naming rights to Old Trafford to help fund either a new stadium or significant improvements to the Theatre of Dreams. It is understood that the iconic name will live on even if a sponsor deal is reached.

Shearer warns Ten Hag could now be seen as weak

In a recent interview with Betfair, Alan Shearer has warned Ten Hag could now be seen as weak by his players after the Tuchel revelation came out earlier this month.

What a mess it’s been. How kind of Man United to go to Ibiza and inform him that he’s still wanted as the manager, and then tell him that they’ve even spoken to other candidates [Thomas Tuchel]. It’s just a bizarre situation, it’s not how things should be done in football. If you are going to speak to other managers then speak to them, but keep it in house, you can’t let the public know. To be undermined like he has done, I know they’re now saying that he has their support and they want him to carry on, but from a personal and human point of view it’s not the right way to treat someone. It takes a lot of his power away from him, will the players look at him and think he’s a really strong manager and he’s in a strong position? Probably not because of the way they have treated him. It was meant to be all new at Old Trafford with the very best coming in, I don’t think they’ve got off to a good start.

Erik ten Hag’s new United contract ‘close’

According to the Daily Mirror, United are close to announcing a two-year contract extension for Ten Hag.

It is believed the contract shall be worth approximately £27m to the Dutchman.

Ten Hag is thought to have agreed to it in principle and the final stages are now being hammered out.

Why Marseille could be perfect for United

It is clear that Ratcliffe sees no way back for Greenwood this summer and a permanent transfer would be the best for all parties.

Juventus have been the team most interested with Greenwood this summer but it is thought they would want to chuck in Federico Chiesa as a makeweight for the winger.

United will be wanting just money from any deal and it doesn’t seem they are interested in swaps. Marseille are unlikely to offer any players in return for Greenwood so the question will be whether they can reach United’s valuation or not.

Marseille ‘open Greenwood talks’

According to The Athletic, Marseille have become the latest team to show an interest in signing United winger Greenwood.

It is believed talks are at an early stage but the French team are keen to get a deal done.

MEN Sport understands United’s preference is for a permanent sale with Napoli and Juventus both having an interest in the winger.

What Ugarte wants to do this summer

Often lost in transfer talk is the wishes of the player and if we are basing interest on that metric, United may struggle to get their man.

Speaking to Amazon at the end of last season, Ugarte seemed content to remain in the French capital.

We’ll see. I would love to [stay at PSG]. We’ll have to see. For now, I’m here and enjoying the end of the season.

Ugarte agent has already namedropped Liverpool amid United links

PSG’s Ugarte became the latest midfielder to be linked with a move to United this week with the Parisians wanting £50m before they consider selling the Uruguayan.

Back in May 2023, his agent Jorge Chijane spoke candidly about the interest in his client to O Jogo before he left Sporting naming Liverpool as a possible option.

He said:

Liverpool? There is a lot of talk, but it is not the only club, there are others. There is much talk, but I am still not sure about the club. There are many possibilities on the table. It’s almost certain that he won’t stay, it’s sure he’ll leave. I believe the situation will be resolved.

Everton open to sales to prevent Branthwaite exit

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the Toffees have received an £8.5m bid from Atalanta for their centre-back Ben Godfrey.

Everton are wanting to hold out for £15m for their defender but are believed to be open for negotiations.

If that deal is completed, United may find it more difficult to negotiate for Branthwaite as the Toffees will be negotiating with a stronger hand having already completed a sale.

Branthwaite transfer blow

If United cannot complete a deal to sign Todibo this summer, they are likely keen to press ahead with their ambitions to bring Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite to the club.

The Toffees want at least £70m for the centre-back and MEN Sport reported on Wednesday that Lindelof and Wan-Bissaka have both been made available for transfer.

However, Liverpool Echo understands United will not be able to offer Lindelof and/or Wan-Bissaka to Everton as Dyche’s club are not keen on either man and would much prefer cold, hard cash.

United’s different approach to complete Todibo deal

Journalist Sacha Tavolieri reports that Ineos have appointed a Swiss lawyer to fight their battle over UEFA’s decision to block Todibo’s move to United.

The centre-back was one of Nice’s star men last season and a move for a defender is high on United’s list of priorities this summer.

United’s Todibo interest

It has been believed that the Reds hold a strong interest in Todibo during the summer transfer window and that theory appeared to be backed up by Ratcliffe recently.

However, hopes of completing a deal were dashed by UEFA after they declared that a transfer between Nice and United would be in breach of their UEFA multi-club ownership rules considering both teams are competing against each other in the Europa League this season.

Everton takeover could prompt UEFA rule change

Former Man City advisor Stefan Borson believes Everton’s proposed takeover could encourage UEFA to bring in rules to accommodate multi-club models.

The multi-club model has recently been brought into question as INEOS owns shares in both United and Nice. Sir Jim Ratcliffe recently claimed that UEFA blocked United’s attempts to sign Jean-Clair Todibo from the Ligue 1 side.

And Borson believes the governing body could bring in rules that accommodate multi-club models in a slightly different way moving forward.

He told Football Insider: “I think it will probably go the other way and you’ll see Uefa bring in rules that accommodate multi-club models in a slightly different way. The biggest indicator is the Everton situation.

“If Friedkin Group feel they can own Roma and Everton, where you don’t have clear distinction between the senior and junior club, you would absolutely think other groups are going to be able to navigate those issues without selling.

“I think it’s more about the timing of Man United and Nice ending up in the same competition, caused by the late qualification by United in the end. I wouldn’t read too much into it more generally.”

West Ham keen on Wan-Bissaka

West Ham United have revived their interest in Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka, according to The Times.

The 26-year-old is surplus to requirements at Old Trafford, paving the way for West Ham to land the former Crystal Palace right-back, who cost United £50m.

United triggered the year option in Wan-Bissaka’s contract last season, but with just 12 months remaining on his deal and the player behind Diego Dalot in the pecking order, they are likely to try and cash in this summer. A cut-price fee of around £12m could be enough to land the defender who has attracted interest from Serie A, including AC Milan.

Talks over ‘several PSG stars’

Manuel Ugarte has been one of the main links to United this week. The Uruguay midfielder has emerged as a potential target with the Old Trafford club looking to add some reinforcements in the centre of the park with doubts over Casemiro’s future.

At 23, Ugarte has a lot to offer and it seems PSG could be willing sellers, though the player’s agent says there have been a number of clubs showing an interest. T

Now, football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that Ugarte isn’t the only target United have at the French club. Taking to Twitter, he detailed talks between the two clubs: “Manuel Ugarte has chances to leave PSG this summer as the club is open to selling him in case of good proposal.

“Manchester United made contact with PSG, talks were on several players and possibilities including Ugarte; no bid has been submitted.”

United have one last chance to sell forgotten £35m man

Donny van de Beek is enjoying some time with his expanding family before reporting back for duty this summer, with his return to Carrington currently pencilled in for late in the first week of July.

The 27-year-old and his partner, Estelle Bergkamp, daughter of former Arsenal forward Dennis, welcomed their second child just over four months ago and with a clear summer they have been taking a break.

Van de Beek presumably tuned in to see the Netherlands end their Euro 2024 group stage campaign against Austria on Tuesday but he could be forgiven if he has decided to skip the tournament.

Ratcliffe’s bold Old Trafford decision is what United need

Old Trafford holds a special place in the hearts of all supporters of the club and even with those who are merely associated with English football.

That is why when any whiff of moving stadium is mentioned, it is met with uproar from sections of the United fanbase.

The latest update on Old Trafford’s future is unlikely to please the purists either.

But embracing a new avenue for funding is exactly what Sir Jim Ratcliffe needs to do to bring United into the modern day.

Fenerbahce ‘interested’ in Lindelof

Give Me Sport is the latest outlet to claim that Jose Mourinho is interested in bringing Victor Lindelof to Fenerbahce.

Lindelof has a year left on his United contract after having his 12-month extension triggered last season. It is uncertain whether United would allow his exit given Raphael Varane’s exit at centre-back.

Lisandro Martinez, Willy Kambwala and Harry Maguire are the current natural options in central defence aside from Lindelof, with Jonny Evans yet to agree a renewal ahead of his deal expiring on Sunday.

Alkass TV Sports makes the claim that the Pro League is looking at the 19-year-old amid its ambition to land younger targets this window.

Garnacho is one of four players United have ringfenced as not for sale under any circumstances this summer. He penned a long-term renewal in April 2023.

PSG ‘set’ Ugarte price tag

The Daily Telegraph says Paris Saint-Germain are demanding a £51m fee for midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

Reports earlier today said United had submitted a bid for the Uruguay star, but saw it rejected. United have made midfield a target area for reinforcement this summer.

Ugarte is expected to leave Paris this window wither way. Casemiro is anticipated to leave United this summer and the club will need a replacement in defensive midfield.

A reminder of today’s main story

Manchester United will consider selling naming rights to Old Trafford to help fund a new stadium or significant redevelopment – but they will keep the iconic name in some form if a deal does go ahead.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s desire is to build a new stadium on the existing Old Trafford footprint but such a project would likely cost in excess of £2bn.

That has led Ineos to consider finance through bank loans, selling naming rights for the stadium or raising ticket prices.

‘Stay away from Branthwaite’

Some United fans are not pleased on the club’s interest in Jarrad Branthwaite.

The club are predicted to come in with a second bid for the Everton star, having seen an initial £43m bid rejected.

Some MEN readers have had their say on United’s intrigue in the England defender. Do you agree? Let us know in the comments.

United ‘make’ enquiry for Bologna attacker

No, not Joshua Zirkzee – that’s old news. Apparently United have now also asked about the availability of Bologna teammate Dan Ndoye.

The 23-year-old winger only scored three goals in 38 matches last season, registering five assists across all competitions.

Ndoye scored against Germany at Euro 2024 on Sunday, which may have piqued the interests of United, says Sky Italia.

As one hopefully great midfield career begins with Mainoo, another appears to have ended.

Casemiro is a mere 32 years of age but nobody is expecting longevity remotely akin to a former United linchpin.

The possible scenario of Ten Hag, reprieved by the indecisive Ineos, overseeing a newish United with Casemiro plodding in midfield isn’t viable.

Everton have no interest in United duo

Everton are not interested in signing United defensive duo Victor Lindelof or Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer.

Both players had their year-long contract extensions triggered last season. The pair had been touted as being part-exchange pawns in a deal for United target Jarrad Branthwaite.

However, the Liverpool Echo has rubbished this suggestion. United saw an initial £43m bid for Branthwaite rejected earlier this month.
