Manchester United could face yet another financial challenge if they decide to part ways with head coach Rúben Amorim within his first year at Old Trafford.

Reports indicate that the club would need to pay a hefty £12 million compensation package to terminate Amorim’s contract before the end of the initial twelve months. This figure comes on top of the £9.2 million United already paid to Sporting CP earlier this year to secure the highly-rated Portuguese manager’s services.

The numbers highlight the financial pressure on the Red Devils, who are still recovering from years of inconsistent spending in the transfer market and costly managerial changes. Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, United have gone through several high-profile managers, each departure leaving behind significant compensation bills. Amorim’s case looks no different, as his contract was designed to protect his value after Sporting reluctantly agreed to his departure.

The board’s decision to appoint Amorim was based on his reputation as a progressive, tactically astute coach, capable of rebuilding squads and developing young talent. However, United’s inconsistent performances in the early stages of the season have raised questions about whether he is the right man to restore the club’s glory days. Fans remain divided—some believe he needs time to implement his philosophy, while others are already calling for change.

Should the club act hastily, the cost of dismissal could worsen their already delicate financial situation, especially after heavy summer spending. Moreover, paying nearly £21 million in combined fees for a manager who fails to succeed would be a bitter pill to swallow. United’s hierarchy now face a difficult dilemma: back Amorim and allow him time to steady the ship, or make another expensive gamble by cutting ties prematurely.

One thing is certain—whatever choice they make will have lasting consequences for both the club’s finances and its long-term direction.
